1. What Hiring Managers Look For - Nick Armstrong from Psychotic Resumes talks about a Ladders UK survey.  He specifically pointed out the stats on how applicants dress and that they may be more important than the actual interview:

For Men, the fashion-based interview killers are:

  1. No tie (52% say fire)
  2. No jacket (50% say fire)
  3. Chinos (50% say fire)
  4. Polo shirts (66% say fire)
  5. Jeans (82% say fire)
  6. T shirts (88% say fire)
  7. Leather jackets (70% say fire)

For Women:

  1. Short skirt (60% say fire)
  2. Low necklines (95% say fire)
  3. Sports shoes (91% say fire)
  4. Dangling jewelery (99% say fire)
  5. Bare legs (94% say fire)
  6. Big shoulder pads – ala 80’s style – (97% of bosses say big shoulder pads are wrong for interview)

Are these extreme - yes.  Are they shallow - yes.  But you can’t say you didn’t know about this before going into the interview.  Know how to present yourself and sell it.

Your goal in dressing for an interview should be to convey that you care about the opportunity, and that you’re willing to be part of the team. You should dress conservatively, without ostentation, and err on the side of formality.

suzie-staffer:

Men, it is important that your shoe-game is correct for your interviews. Of course, you want to wear a nice fitting suit (tie optional). Don’t go crazy with shirt colors (let alone the shoes!). A clean, crisp white button down is always best. If you want color, pastels are your safest bet. Of course, make sure your are Well Groomed (showered, nails scrubbed clean, teeth brushed, ears swabbed, hair combed and deordorized, minus the fragrance) and On Time! Good Luck!
